The Aquatic Centre consists of two pools. There is a 25 metre, 8 lane pool for lap swimming and a separate free-form leisure pool. In addition, the facility provides a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, waterslide, one metre diving board, rope swing and lots of other fun things for the whole family. There is also a fitness gym adjacent to the pool which has a wide range of cardio and weight lifting equipment. The temperature in the lap pool is kept at 27 C, which is just right for laps. The leisure pool is kept at 30 C for the comfort of all ages. The hot tub is kept at 40 C. The leisure pool goes from 0.3 metres to 1.06 metres in depth. The lap pool starts at 1.2 metres and goes to a depth of 3.5 metres.

| Swim Level Descriptions |
Red Cross Swim Preschool
This is a 7-level program for children 6 months to 6 years of age. Children enter swim levels based on their age and abilities. Salamander through to Whale are unparented. The children will be with the instructor at all times.
Your child can be evaluated to assess at what swim level they should start. Ask a lifeguard for assistance.

Starfish (6-18 months)
An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement entries and songs and play in the water. |

Duck (18-30 months)
For Toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games songs and active water play. |

Sea Turtle
(30 to 36 months parented or 3-6 years unparented)
A transitional level for preschoolers and their parents. Parents can gradually transfer the preschoolers to the care of the instructor, or, for children 3-5 years old who have not previously taken swimming lessons Sea Turtle is where they will enter the program. This level develops skills in swimming, glides and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries. |

Salamander (3-6 years)
Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water. |

Sunfish (3-6 years)
Assisted by an Instructor preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water. |

Crocodile (3-6 years)
Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water. |

Whale (3-6 years)
In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water. |

Red Cross Swim Kids
Red Cross Swim Kids 10-level program for kids 7 years & older.
Swim Kids 1
This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.
Swim Kids 2
This level helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking and with assisted glides.
Swim Kids 3
This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well the foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and children will work on floats and changing direction. 15 meter swim.
Swim Kids 4
The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dive, surface support and develop a greater sense of self safety by understanding their own limits. 25 meter swim.
Swim Kids 5
Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. 50 meter swim.
Swim Kids 6
Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. 75 meter swim.
Swim Kids 7
More front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke. Whip kick is introduced. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for increasing endurance. 150 meter swim.
Swim Kids 8
Level 8 provides an introduction to the breaststroke, feet first surface dives and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and practice rescue breathing. 300 meter swim.
Swim Kids 9
Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. Work on headfirst shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. 400 meter swim
Swim Kids 10
Introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warmup/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of other from the ice, and head-first and feet first shallow dives. Endurance is built using 500 meter swim. |
| Synchronized Swimming |
Prerequisite: Swim Kids Level 6
This is a unique water sport that combines swimming, gymnastics and music. Recreational Star program will be taught.

Do you need to focus on a specific skill or stroke item? Do you only have 1 item left to complete a level? Then a private lesson may be the answer for you! Private lessons are not recommended for water safety knowledge, but for specific items that are not completed in a regular lesson set. All lessons are taught by our certified Red Cross instructors. Times will be arranged around their current schedules.
Private 1 person per ½ hr lesson
Youth: $20 Adult: $20 + tax
Semi-private 2 people per ½ hr lesson

Assistant Water Safety
Instructor Course (AWSI)
This certification course is a pre-requisite to the Red Cross
Water Safety Instructor Course. The course covers the foundation
of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning
styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety
supervision and feedback. Candidates are evaluated during 8
hours of assistant teaching and through individual study assignments.
Once certified, Assistant Water Safety Instructors have
two years to become a Water Safety Instructor.
Prerequisite 15 yrs & SK 10 or equivalent strokes

Water Safety Instructor
Course (WSI)
The Water Safety Instructor Course further develops instructional
ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach
the Red Cross Swim continuum: Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red
Cross Swim Kids and Aqua Adults programs. The course focuses
on how to effectively apply the information learned in the
Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course to the Red Cross Swim
programs. Other topics include instructional emergency
response skills, stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies.
Course includes practical teaching experience. Upon
successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as
Water Safety Instructors.
Water Safety Instructor status must be recertified every 2 yrs.

The goal of this training is to provide aquatic centre staff with
the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, evaluate, and
control hazards in a pool setting. Pool Operators session is
intended as an introductory course. Students attending the
sessions will be exposed to information that will develop an
understanding of Swimming Pool Operations and maintenance.

Aquatic Volunteer Program
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion, SK 9 swimming ability and min 14 yrs of age
This program is designed to give enthusiatic individuals an idea of what it would be like to have a career in Aquatics. Successful applicants will be provided with a facility orientation and the opportunity to work along side our highly trained aquatic staff assisting with swimming lessons, special needs programs, fitness classes and community events. Working with seniors, adults or children of all ages is a great way to give back to the comunity and your hours will be tracked so you can apply them towards high school credits or our facility incentive program. Pick up an application form and become a part of our team.

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Medallion Award teaches
an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in
the four components of water rescue education - judgement,
knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows
and carries, and defense and release methods in preparation
for challenging rescues of increased risk involving
conscious and unconscious victims of various types.
Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a
timed swim.

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers that want the
