Vernon Steps Out (VSO) is an independent walking program committed to motivating participants to get active and make healthy living choices. Join us as we walk across the Hawaiian Islands and add a new dimension to your walking program. With access to the VSO website you can track your steps in a fun and interactive way and learn information on healthy living.

What does the VSO package include?

  • a free high quality pedometer access to the VSO website where you can log-in your steps information on upcoming events such as hosted walks, lectures, workshops, and community green initiatives free or discounted registration to Vernon Steps Out speakers, workshops, seminars and programs
  • qualify for a chance to win $1,000 travel voucher with every 100,000 steps walked, courtesy of Edis Computers

Adult $20 membership fee $10 annual renewal fee
Youth $15 membership fee $5 annual renewal fee

Hiking the Valley

Recreation Services is hiking the Okanagan Valley with STEPS OUT

The Steps Out program is offering a guided hike in communities throughout the Okanagan. Take advantage of this great opportunity to meet new people, discover hidden secrets of each community and expand your list of hikes to conquer. All Hikes are FREE - but registration is required on the Outdoors Club website or phone Deb Treherne, Recreation Programmer at 550-3672. Register early as spaces are limited.

The hike in Vernon area: Sat, Oct 16 10:00am
A moderate 2-3 hour hike through the beautiful hidden valley of Cougar Canyon located on the south side of Vernon overlooking Kalamalka Lake. Bring your camera for great views and watch rock climbers scaling the cliff s. Meet at Tim Hortons across from Polson Park.

Vernon Steps Out - Speaker Series

All programs are at the Wesbild Centre from 1:30-2:30pm. You must pre-register for these programs. Each session is $8, but free to Vernon Steps Out members.

Steps Out - A Good Warm Up
Join Kerry Bokenfohr from Interior Health as she focuses on the importance of warming up, static vs dynamic stretching and correct posture when walking. Kerry will help you understand the main muscles that are used when walking as well as the types of walking styles. Sponsored by: Interior Health

Off Season Cycling

This program is for cyclists of all abilities, and is designed to help you maintain your cycling fitness during the winter months. Workouts will be lead by BCRPA certified Indoor Cycling Instructor Laura Medcalf. Laura is also an NCCP trained Triathlon Coach. Classes will include core strength training, coordination, stretching, and will build throughout the off-season to include endurance, strength and power training. Bring your bike and join in the fun! Strollercize

Strollersize takes traditional walking or jogging with a stroller and incorporates cardio drills, body resistance exercises, core work and resistance band exercises along the way. Low impact and intensity modifications are always provided. Please bring a mat, water and towel to this class. Moms and dads as well as babies of any age are welcome, as long as baby is happy in the stroller.

Location: Wesbild, Great Room, but we will try to be outside at Polson Park as long as possible.

Fitness Instructor Cindy Garvin:
Cindy started her career as a fitness professional in 1984 with a Certificate in Health & Fitness Studies at Simon Fraser University. She followed this up with certifications in Aquatic Fitness, Weight Training and Personal Training. In 1995 Cindy started to take specialty training for special populations and rehabilitation. She has taken training with BC GF Strong Centre, BC Arthritis Foundation and The Aquatic Therapy Rehab Institute. Cindy's specialty is now Aquatic Therapy and Core Stability training. She also enjoys working with Paralympic athletes. In her spare time Cindy can be found on one of her five bicycles or making jewelry for her web site.

Get Active Recreation Pass
The Get Active Recreation Pass is a special introductory 1 month pass to the fitness gym and pool at the Recreation Centre. It is intended for individuals who have NEVER had a swim or fitness room pass through Recreation Services. If you are a new resident to Greater Vernon or if you still don't know where the Recreation Centre is located....we would like to meet you!

The Get Active Recreation Pass includes 1 month access to the fitness room and pool for only $20. For more information call 250-545-6035 (ext 0).
